Schooling is the biggest practical concern for expat families moving to KL — and it’s the one area where you genuinely need to plan well in advance. The good news: KL has one of the widest selections of international schools in Southeast Asia, covering British, American, Australian, IB, and other curricula. The less good news: the best schools have waiting lists, fees are significant, and the school you choose will largely determine which neighbourhood you need to live in. Here’s what I’ve learned talking to expat families across the city.
Why International Schools in KL?
Malaysian national schools teach primarily in Malay (Bahasa Malaysia) with some subjects in English. While the quality varies, for expat children arriving from English-medium education systems mid-way through their schooling, or for families planning to return home within a few years, international schools offer curriculum continuity that national schools can’t provide.
International schools in Malaysia are also permitted to charge fees to foreign nationals (with restrictions on Malaysian citizen enrolment in most). As an expat employee, your company may contribute to or fully cover school fees — this is a significant benefit worth negotiating into any KL employment package, as fees at premium international schools run RM60,000–120,000+ per year.
The Main Curricula Available
British Curriculum (IGCSE / A-Level): The most popular choice for British expat families. Schools follow the Cambridge curriculum leading to IGCSE at Year 11 and A-Levels at Year 13. Direct pathway to UK universities. Several strong British curriculum schools in KL.
International Baccalaureate (IB): The globally portable curriculum. IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP), and Diploma Programme (DP) are offered at multiple KL schools. Recognised by universities worldwide.
American Curriculum: AP (Advanced Placement) and American High School Diploma pathway. Popular with American families and those intending to apply to US universities.
Australian Curriculum: Offered at a smaller number of schools, popular with Australian expat families.
Top International Schools in KL
Garden International School (GIS)
One of KL’s oldest and most established British curriculum schools. Three campuses in KL (Mont Kiara, Bukit Kiara, and Ampang). Strong reputation across all age groups from Early Years through to A-Levels. The Mont Kiara campus is the largest and most well-resourced. GIS has a large British expat community and very active extracurricular programme. Annual fees approximately RM60,000–90,000 depending on year group. Waiting list for popular year groups; apply early.
Alice Smith School
Consistently ranked among the top British curriculum schools in Southeast Asia. Two campuses: Primary in Jalan Bellamy (near KL city centre) and Secondary in Equine Park (south of KL). Strong academic results, well-regarded teaching staff, and an excellent reputation maintained over decades. Annual fees RM65,000–100,000. More selective than some schools; waiting lists common for popular year groups.
Cempaka International School
IB and British curriculum options. Long-established with campuses in Cheras and Damansara. Strong reputation particularly in arts and extracurriculars alongside solid academics. More affordable than some of the premium schools (fees from RM35,000/year) while maintaining good quality.
Nexus International School
IB World School in Putrajaya. Modern campus, strong IB programme from PYP through to Diploma. Popular with families living in Putrajaya, Cyberjaya, and southern KL suburbs. Annual fees approximately RM55,000–80,000.
ISKL (International School of Kuala Lumpur)
The primary American curriculum school in KL. Located in Ampang. Large campus, strong American-focused community, AP curriculum with pathway to US universities. Annual fees approximately RM80,000–110,000. Popular with US embassy families and American corporate expats.
British International School of Kuala Lumpur (BISKL)
Part of the Nord Anglia Education group. Located in Sri Hartamas (close to Mont Kiara). Cambridge curriculum. Strong extracurricular programme drawing on Nord Anglia’s global network including MIT STEAM collaboration and Juilliard performing arts curriculum. Annual fees RM65,000–100,000+.
Mont Kiara International School (MKIS)
American curriculum school located in Mont Kiara. Smaller and more community-feel than ISKL. Popular with families specifically in the Mont Kiara area who don’t want to face the Ampang commute for ISKL. Annual fees approximately RM55,000–80,000.
Practical Tips for International School Selection
Start the process before you arrive. The best schools have waiting lists for popular year groups — sometimes 12–18 months long. Contact schools as soon as your KL move is confirmed and get on waiting lists immediately. Many schools offer a place-holding deposit.
Consider school location when choosing your neighbourhood. KL traffic is significant and a school run that sounds manageable on paper can become a daily ordeal in practice. Living close to your child’s school is one of the most impactful quality-of-life decisions you’ll make. Mont Kiara has the highest concentration of international schools nearby (GIS, BISKL, MKIS, and others); Ampang has Alice Smith Secondary and ISKL.
School fees are negotiable as part of your employment package. Many multinationals offer an education allowance as a standard expat benefit. If yours doesn’t, it’s worth asking — schools fees are the biggest expat family expense after rent.
Visit schools in person if possible. The atmosphere, parent community, and teaching style of a school are hard to assess from a website. Most KL international schools offer open days and tours — if you’re visiting KL for a house-hunting trip, schedule school visits at the same time.
