KLIA to KL City Centre: Every Way to Get From the Airport to KL

The question I get asked most often by people who have just booked their flights to Malaysia is how to get from the airport to KL city centre. There are several options and they vary wildly in cost, speed, and convenience. The right one depends on what time you arrive, how much luggage you have, and where you are staying.

Here is everything you need to know about getting from KLIA to KL.

First: KLIA vs KLIA2

Kuala Lumpur has two airport terminals under the KLIA umbrella, and they are about 2km apart but operate differently:

• KLIA (Main Terminal) — used by Malaysia Airlines, Emirates, Qatar Airways, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines, and most full-service international carriers
• KLIA2 — used by AirAsia, AirAsia X, Scoot, and most budget carriers

Check your ticket carefully. Getting to the wrong terminal means missing your flight. The KLIA Ekspres train serves both, and there are shuttle buses between them, but they add time.

Option 1: KLIA Ekspres (Express Train) — Recommended

The fastest, easiest, most comfortable way to get from KLIA to KL city centre.

• Journey time: 28 minutes (KLIA main terminal to KL Sentral)
• Cost: RM 55 from KLIA main terminal / RM 55 from KLIA2
• Runs: Every 15-20 minutes, 5am to midnight approximately
• Destination: KL Sentral — KL’s main transport hub, with connections to the LRT, KTM, Monorail, and bus lines

The train is spacious, air-conditioned, has luggage racks, and takes you directly to the centre of the city in under 30 minutes. If you have any amount of luggage, this is significantly better than sitting in a car in traffic.

How to buy tickets: At the KLIA Ekspres ticket machines or counter in the arrivals hall. You can also buy via the KLIA Ekspres app or website in advance. Credit cards accepted.

Note on KLIA2: From KLIA2, the KLIA Ekspres first stops at KLIA main terminal (10 minutes) then continues to KL Sentral (another 28 minutes). The same ticket covers both terminals.

Option 2: KL Transit (Stopping Train)

Same train line as KLIA Ekspres but stops at Bandar Tasik Selatan, Putrajaya/Cyberjaya, and Salak Tinggi before KL Sentral.

• Journey time: About 35-45 minutes to KL Sentral depending on boarding point
• Cost: RM 30-35 (cheaper than Ekspres)
• Good for: If you are staying near one of the intermediate stops, or want to save RM 20

For most people arriving in KL for the first time with luggage, the Ekspres is worth the extra cost for the time saving and the directness.

Option 3: Grab (Ride-Hailing)

Grab is Malaysia’s dominant ride-hailing app (think Uber). Available from both KLIA and KLIA2.

• Journey time: 45-90 minutes depending on traffic
• Cost: RM 60-120 (very variable — surges during peak hours, public holidays, and bad weather)
• Good for: Door-to-door if you have a lot of luggage, if you are arriving very late or very early when trains are limited, or if your destination is not near KL Sentral

Important: Do not accept offers from taxi touts in the arrivals hall. These charge significantly more than metered taxis or Grab. Use the official Grab pickup zones — they are clearly signposted in both KLIA and KLIA2 arrivals.

Download Grab before you fly and set up your account so you can book the moment you have a SIM card or WiFi. The airport has free WiFi in arrivals.

Option 4: Airport Coach (Bus)

Several coach services run between KLIA and various points in KL city.

• Operators: Aerobus, Airport Coach, Sky Bus
• Journey time: 60-90 minutes depending on traffic and route
• Cost: RM 10-20 depending on service and destination
• Destinations: KL Sentral, Puduraya/Pudu, KLCC area, Subang Jaya
• Good for: Budget travellers with minimal luggage

The bus is significantly cheaper but also significantly slower and less comfortable. If you arrive during peak hour or on a busy weekend, the highway can add an hour to your journey. Unless you are very budget-conscious and travelling light, the KLIA Ekspres is worth the extra cost.

Option 5: Metered Taxi

Available from the official taxi counter in arrivals. You pay at the counter for a fixed-rate coupon, then give it to the taxi driver rather than dealing with the meter.

• Journey time: 45-90 minutes depending on traffic
• Cost: RM 70-120 depending on destination zone

Honest assessment: Grab is usually cheaper and easier unless you cannot use a smartphone. Use Grab over metered taxi.

Getting a SIM Card at the Airport

Currency at the Airport

There are currency exchange counters at KLIA but the rates are consistently worse than what you can get in the city. Get a small amount of MYR cash for immediate expenses (RM 50-100 for bus or initial small purchases) but do not exchange large amounts at the airport.

The better approach: use a Wise card which gives you the real mid-market rate at ATMs across Malaysia. There are ATMs in the arrivals hall. Or pay by card where accepted (train tickets, larger purchases).

From KL Sentral to Your Hotel

If you take the KLIA Ekspres to KL Sentral, you will arrive at the largest transport hub in KL. From here:

• Walk to your hotel if it is in the KL Sentral area (several good hotels within 5 minutes’ walk)
• Take the Monorail, LRT, or KTM to other city areas (connections are in the same building)
• Book a Grab from KL Sentral to your specific address

KL Sentral has a shopping mall, several restaurants, convenience stores, and an ATM bank — good for stocking up before you head to your accommodation.
