Malaysia Digital Nomad Visa: The Complete Guide to the DE Rantau Nomad Pass

If you want to work remotely from Malaysia legally, the DE Rantau Nomad Pass is the most straightforward route available right now. It was introduced in 2022 and is specifically designed for digital nomads and remote workers who earn income from outside Malaysia.

What Is the DE Rantau Nomad Pass?

DE Rantau (Digital Economy Rantau) is a Malaysian government initiative to attract remote workers and digital nomads. The Nomad Pass lets you live in Malaysia for up to 12 months while working for foreign clients or employers. It is renewable for another 12 months.

It is not a work permit. You cannot use it to work for a Malaysian company. Your income must come from outside Malaysia. But if you are a freelancer, remote employee, or business owner earning from abroad, this is the legal path.

Who Can Apply?

You qualify if you are a tech professional (developer, designer, product manager, data analyst), a digital content creator or marketer, a remote worker employed by a foreign company, a freelancer with foreign clients, or a business owner running an online business with foreign customers.

The Income Requirements

Tech professionals and freelancers: Minimum USD 24,000 per year (USD 2,000 per month).

Non-tech professionals: Minimum USD 60,000 per year (USD 5,000 per month).

These are gross income requirements from foreign sources.

What Documents Do You Need?

  • Valid passport (minimum 14 months validity)
  • Proof of employment or freelance income (employment letter, contracts, bank statements)
  • Income evidence meeting the minimum threshold (3 months bank statements or tax returns)
  • Health insurance valid in Malaysia
  • Application fee payment

Application Fees

  • Application fee: USD 50 (approximately RM 230)
  • Approval fee: USD 1,000 (approximately RM 4,600) – paid after approval
  • Dependant pass: USD 500 per dependant

How to Apply

Applications are made online at derantau.mdec.com.my. Create an account, fill in the form, upload documents, pay USD 50, wait 4-6 weeks for review, pay USD 1,000 on approval, then collect your pass in Malaysia.

What You Get

  • Legal right to live in Malaysia for 12 months, renewable
  • Right to bring dependants on dependant passes
  • Access to DE Rantau co-working hubs in KL, Penang, Labuan
  • Ability to open a Malaysian bank account
  • Access to DE Rantau community events

Managing Your Money

Once you have the pass, open a Malaysian bank account. For receiving international income, I use Wise to convert between currencies at the real exchange rate. It is significantly cheaper than standard bank transfers and you can set it up before arriving in Malaysia.

Health Insurance

The DE Rantau application requires proof of health insurance valid in Malaysia. For nomads and remote workers, SafetyWing is designed exactly for this situation. It covers you across multiple countries, includes hospital stays and emergency treatment, and is accepted for the DE Rantau application. Starting from around USD 45 per month.

Staying Connected While Working Remotely

Malaysia has excellent internet. Mobile data SIMs cost RM 40-80 per month for unlimited data. For security on public WiFi at coworking spaces, I use NordVPN. It also lets me access UK catch-up TV and UK streaming services from Malaysia.

The Honest Verdict

The DE Rantau Nomad Pass is a genuinely good visa for remote workers. The USD 2,000 per month income threshold is achievable for most tech professionals, the process is relatively straightforward, and KL is an excellent base. Fast internet, low cost of living, incredible food, central in Southeast Asia.

The USD 1,000 fee is the main barrier. But weighed against visa run costs and the legal clarity it provides, it is worth it if you plan to base yourself in KL for a year or more.

Sensible approach: come on a tourist visa first, spend a month testing the lifestyle, apply for DE Rantau once you know you want to stay.
