KL has better views than most cities give it credit for. The usual answer is “go to the Petronas Towers” or “go to the KL Tower” — both correct, both obvious, both covered by every guidebook. What’s less covered is that KL also has a handful of rooftop bars, hilltop parks, and architectural vantage points that give you equally impressive views for the price of a drink, or free, without the ticket queues.
This guide covers the full spectrum — from paid observation decks at the top to free hilltop spots, from rooftop bars where the view comes with a cocktail to hidden terraces most tourists never find.
1. Petronas Twin Towers — Skybridge (Level 41/42) and Observation Deck (Level 86)
The obvious starting point. The Skybridge on levels 41 and 42 connects the two towers and offers views directly across to the other tower and down at the KLCC park below — a genuinely vertiginous perspective that photographs don’t fully capture. The Observation Deck on level 86 gives you the high city view: Petronas and KLCC below, KL spreading out in every direction, Genting Highlands visible on a clear day to the northeast.
Tickets: Book online at petronastwintowers.com.my — same-day tickets are often sold out, especially at weekends. Book at least 2–3 days ahead. Combined Skybridge + Observation Deck tickets are available.
Best time: Late afternoon for sunset shots with the towers illuminated against the blue-gold sky. The view is good at any time but the light is best in the hour before sunset.
Cost: Around RM100+ for adults (verify current pricing on their site).
2. KL Tower (Menara KL) — Observation Deck and Sky Box
The telecommunications tower on Bukit Nanas (above the KL Forest Eco Park) was KL’s tallest structure before the Petronas Towers opened. At 421 metres, the indoor observation deck and outdoor Sky Deck give you direct sightlines to the Petronas Towers from eye level — one of the best photography angles for the towers in the city.
Sky Box: A glass-floored extension of the outdoor observation deck with views straight down. Not for those with vertigo. A very good photo opportunity.
Best time: Golden hour for the towers with warm light. Night views are also excellent — the towers are dramatically lit after dark.
Cost: Around RM105 for the Sky Deck (verify current pricing).
3. Marini’s on 57 and Fuego — Rooftop Dining with Tower Views
The 57th floor of the office tower at 3 Jalan P. Ramlee, directly opposite the Petronas Towers, houses two restaurants: Marini’s on 57 (Italian fine dining) and Fuego (Latin American). Both have outdoor terraces facing the towers at roughly eye level — the most dramatic dinner-with-a-view in KL.
The outdoor terrace access requires a minimum spend at the bar or restaurant. A cocktail or two on the terrace as the sun sets and the towers illuminate is one of KL’s great experiences, and more affordable than dinner if you want the view without the full fine-dining bill.
Best time: Arrive at sunset (check the time for the current date — typically 7pm–7:30pm in Malaysia year-round). The terrace fills up quickly; arrive early or book ahead for a table.
Cost: Cocktails from RM50–80. Dinner is fine-dining prices.
4. Heli Lounge Bar — Landing Pad Rooftop Bar
The Heli Lounge Bar sits on an actual helicopter landing pad on the roof of the Menara KH building in the Ampang Park area — a circular outdoor platform with 360-degree views across KL. During the day it’s a helipad; at night it becomes a bar. The setting is genuinely unusual — you’re on a circle of tarmac in the sky, the city spreading in every direction, no walls or barriers except a low railing.
The views are excellent but the space is limited and can be crowded on weekend nights. The cocktails are mid-range in price, the atmosphere is relaxed. One of KL’s best “only in KL” experiences. Check their social media for opening hours as they vary.
5. Gravity Sky Bar — Vue Hotel
Gravity Sky Bar on the 34th floor of the Vue Hotel in KL has particularly good views north and west over the city, different from the Petronas-tower-centric views of most rooftop bars. On a clear day you can see Genting Highlands and the range of hills to the east. Good for a different perspective on the city’s geography.
6. Sky51 @ The Platinum
A rooftop bar in the KLCC area with views towards the towers — useful as an alternative to Marini’s and Fuego when those are fully booked. Lower profile with lower prices, similar viewing angle on the towers from a slightly different position.
7. KL Forest Eco Park (Bukit Nanas) — Free City Views Through Forest
The forest reserve at the base of KL Tower has a free treetop walkway offering something genuinely unusual: jungle canopy in the foreground, KL skyscrapers behind. It’s not a panoramic viewpoint in the traditional sense but the juxtaposition — primary rainforest with a skyline — is photographic in a way that no observation deck matches.
Free to enter. The canopy walkway is part of the managed trail system. Best in the morning before it gets hot, or late afternoon as the light changes.
8. Bukit Tabur — The Hiker’s View
Bukit Tabur is a ridgeline hike east of KL, about 30–40 minutes by car from the city centre. The trail runs along a narrow quartz ridge with vertiginous drops on both sides and views across the Klang Valley — KL’s skyline in the distance, the hills and reservoirs of Selangor in the other direction. This is a genuine hike, not a stroll — the terrain is exposed, some sections require using hands, and vertigo is a real issue for some people on the narrower sections.
Go early — before 7am — to be on the ridge before the heat builds. The views at sunrise are extraordinary. Note that access regulations change periodically; verify the current situation before going. This is a popular weekend hike for KL’s outdoor community.
9. Lake Titiwangsa — Free Skyline View
The city viewpoint that most tourists never find. From the east bank of Lake Titiwangsa (the large recreational lake in northern KL), you have a clear, unobstructed view south across the water to the KL skyline — Petronas Towers, KL Tower, and surrounding buildings in a single panoramic composition. Free to access, open late, with a jogging path and pedal boats available. This is the best free skyline view in KL.
Take the LRT to Titiwangsa station. Walk 5 minutes to the lakeside. Best from late afternoon through evening when the buildings are lit.
10. KLCC Park — The Classic View
The ground-level view of the Petronas Towers from KLCC Park is the most photographed view in Malaysia. It sounds obvious but it’s obvious for a reason — looking up at the towers from the park with the fountain and lake in the foreground is genuinely dramatic in a way that no amount of over-reproduction diminishes. Go at night when the towers are illuminated and the musical fountain is running.
Free to access. The park is open until midnight. The best spots are along the south bank of the lake facing north toward the towers.
11. Atmosphere 360 — The Revolving Restaurant
The revolving restaurant at the top of KL Tower rotates once every 90 minutes, giving you a full 360-degree view of the city over the course of a meal. The view is good (though slightly below the observation deck level). The food is buffet-style — functional rather than exceptional — but the view and the experience justify the price for a special occasion.
Book in advance, particularly for weekend dinners. Dress code applies (smart casual).
Photography Tips for KL Views
The best photography conditions in KL are:
- Blue hour (20–40 minutes after sunset): sky is deep blue, city lights are bright, a balance that gives the most dramatic results
- Golden hour (30–60 minutes before sunset): warm light, good for tower detail shots
- After midnight: many rooftop bars stay open late, and the city from above at 1–2am has a completely different, quieter quality
- Rainy season perspective: after a rain shower, KL’s air clears and you get exceptional visibility on days that follow storms
